Groups / Brush Painting Class
The GBCCA Chinese brush painting class meets every Friday between 7 and 10 p.m. in the GBCCA center. Mr. Qing-Xiong Ma has been teaching since 1999. Mr. Ma was a student of the late Chinese master Lu Yan Shao and had many highly acclaimed solo exhibits of his work in China before traveling to the US in 1988. After moving to the States, he started to develop his signature style of blending western art concepts into the philosophy and technique of Chinese painting. In addition to this class, Mr. Ma gives workshops in different museums in the Boston area and also teaches at other locations.
The Chinese brush painting has a long history. The earliest portrait of lives in the palace dates back to the fourth century. The techniques in using lines, shades, and color in these paintings are already very sophisticated. Nature and landscape painting culminated in the 10th century. Artists have since carried on the tradition of using the brush to achieve the desired artistic effects. Mastering the use of brush is of ultimate importance in Chinese brush painting. The brush is usually made of animal hair such as goat or fox hair. The media for Chinese painting are, in general, silk cloth and all types of rice paper.
The class currently has thirteen students. Some are recent beginners while others have been studying since 1999. Each student is learning at his/her own pace. The topics covered range from the fundamental ‘Si-Jun-Zi (four virtues)’ to flowers/birds and landscapes. During class Mr. Ma demonstrates the various techniques for the students to follow with a hands-on practice period.
Most students are also members of the Chinese Painting Guild (CPG), which coordinates several exhibits of students’ works every year. Participations in exhibits are encouraged but not a requirement for the class.
Some of the students’ work can be viewed here .
If interested in joining the class please call Betty Chao at 781-738-7321.
2012 fall session will start on Oct. 5th. The tuition is $250/10 classes.

Step up for the grand view
