Donation for Typhoon Morakot Victims in Taiwan

Dear GBCCA members and friends,

By this time, I believe you all have heard or learned from news or friends that Typhoon Morakot dumped more than 80 inches (2 meters) of rain on 8/8 weekend in southern Taiwan.

The storm unleashed the worst floods that the island has seen in 50 years. Maorakot caused landslides and buried numerous villages. It caused many causalities (deaths) and severe damage. The agricultural and property damage is estimated in excess of 50 billion New Taiwan dollars (US$1.5 billion). President Ma Ying-Jeou called it the most severe damage to the island in more than 50 years. It is very sad to hear that there are 170 homes and about 380 people believed to be buried in the debris of a landslide in Shiao Lin, the hardest-hit village. Many streets were covered in mud and, roads as well as bridges had buckled and collapsed amid days of torrential rains. Victims need urgently to rebuild their homes and infrastructures for them to move on.

Now is the time for us to show our compassion, love and care, to provide assistance, and to extend a helping hand to help the victims to recover from their nightmare and rebuild their homes. GBCCA Executive Committee has decided to open a special account to accept our members’ donation. We are also in the process of teaming up with the other Boston Chinese communities to organize a Boston wide fund driving event. I will keep you informed once we have reached a specific plan. I also need your support to make this a successful event to help the Taiwan Morakot typhoon victims.

Please make a donation now, you can write the check to GBCCA and specify that it is for the Morakot relief efforts. Your donation is qualified for tax deduction. You can mail the donation check to GBCCA, 437 Cherry Street, West Newton, MA 02465. The donation we collected will be passed to the appropriate channels such as RedCross or other creditable charity organizations for exclusive use for Typhoon Morakot Relief efforts. You can also specify the charity name in the check if you have a preference.

Han-Yu Kuo,
2009 President of GBCCA
